Hey, Marko, could you describe the spraining your ankle experience? With such a long trip, you were lucky it didn't happen further from the parking lot. How bad was it? Did you require assistance from your party? Did you used a support wooden pole, or your hiking pole was enough to give you the needed balance? Was it painful, were you able to drive on the way back, all the details would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, this is what I fear most in the mountains; avalanches can be avoided, bears could be somewhat spotted and warned of your presence, getting stranded on slabs could be prevented by not going off trail, crevasses, fallen rocks, lightning could be also dealt with, but straining your ankle is an unexpected event.
Hey Adrian. I had sprained my other ankle before so I knew right away what had happened. There was a popping feeling as my foot got bent. It felt painful but not terribly painful. It felt like something wasn't right. I was able to hike out without assistance, but it was pretty difficult. This sprain doesn't seem as bad as my last one. By the time we got back to the car, my ankle had swollen quite a bit. When we got to the Canmore hospital I could barely walk. Luckily there were no fractures. Amelie drove to Canmore, after the hospital I drove because it was pretty late and Amelie was quite tired. The physio guy tells me I should be able to walk in two weeks, but may be a while before I can do more physically demanding trips. The last time I sprained my ankle, I was out of scrambling for about 3 months.
I'm wondering if you've ever did any stretching exercises prior to starting a scramble. I can confirm, on my past almost 200 trips I've done, maybe 1% of the people have done any streching exercises; they just come out of the cars, and immediately rush onto the trails, you barely have time to double check if you've forgotten something. It's an insane strategy in my opinion; some other people I know, more experienced, would start likewise but at least after 20 minutes they would take a first break, so I would consider these first 20 minutes as part of the "stretching/warm up time". Most people however, would not stop until 1 hour time. In which category you're in? Well, I hope you're doing better now, Marko, I haven't seen any trips lately from you. All I know, I'll never ever go on a trip without stretching my legs in first.(btw, did your boots were very tight?) Fast recovery, cheers,Adrian
